Biography:Second Lieutenant, King's Royal Rifles (1943); Military Cross (1945); Commanding Officer, 2nd Royal Green Jackets (1965); Lieutenant General (1973); General (1976); Commander in Chief, UK Land Forces (1976-78); Chief of the General Staff (1979-82); Field Marshal and Chief of the Defence Staff (1982-85); Lord Lieutenant of Greater London (1986-98); created Baron Bramall of Brushfield, life peer, 1987. MCC president 1988-89. Chairman of the Imperial War Museum. Appointed OBE 1965, KCB 1974, GCB 1979 and KG 1990 for military services.
